AUSTIN, Texas (Oct. 31, 2016) — He’s getting an early start on a dissolute life.
A 12-year-old boy who was allegedly drunk led police on a high-speed chase in Texas that only ended when he slammed into a telephone pole.
Police say they spotted the SUV around 7:30 a.m. weaving across the road and narrowly avoiding striking a cyclist. An officer tried to pull the vehicle over but the driver sped off.
“At that point, we didn’t know it was a 12-year-old behind the wheel,” Officer Ivan Ramos of the Austin police said.
As the chase continued, the child struck another vehicle head on but kept going. The driver wasn’t hurt. A few blocks later, the chase came to an end when the boy lost control and struck a utility pole, knocking it over and rolling his car onto its side.
When police pulled him out of the vehicle they realized he might be drunk. He was taken to an area children’s hospital and will face charges in juvenile court of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.
