PENSACOLA, Florida — A 9-year-old girl died after when her 325-pound cousin sat on her for 10 minutes as punishment for acting up.
Veronica Green Posey, 64, told police that her cousin, Dericka Lindsay had been “out of control” and that she sat on her to discipline her. The little girl said that she could not breath and when Posey got off her, she was unresponsive.
Posey said she then called 911 and began CPR, the Pensacola News Journal reported. She was charged with homicide and cruelty toward a child and was later released on $125,000 bond.
Two other adults who were in the home, Grace Joan Smith, 69, and James Edmund Smith, 62 — who are Posey’s aunt and uncle — were also arrested and charged with child neglect and cruelty toward a child for failing to intervene.
Grace Smith told police that she had called Posey to her house to help discipline the little girl. Smith said that Posey struck Dericka with a ruler and a metal pipe, before the girl ran to an armchair where Posey sat on her.
James Smith told detectives that Posey sat on Dericka for about 10 minutes. When the girl complained of not being able to breath he said Posey waited another two minutes before getting up.
Officials with the Florida Department of Children and Families told the News Journal that the agency had had previous contact with the family and that a review was being conducted.
