ORLANDO — An ex-con shot and killed four young kids before turning the gun on himself following an hours-long standoff with cops, during which an officer was shot and seriously wounded.
Gary Wayne Lindsey Jr., a 35-year-old felon who was on probation for arson and other charges, barricaded himself with the four kids inside his apartment after cops arrived there in response to a domestic abuse call involving his girlfriend.
As cops tried to make their way into the apartment, Lindsey allegedly opened fire, striking Officer Kevin Valencia of the Orlando police. He was listed in critical injuries after surgery but was expected to live.
That sparked a 24-hour standoff with Lindsey barricaded inside his home with the kids — two of whom are his, with the others belonging to his girlfriend.
Cops tried to communicate with him by cell phone in an effort to convince him to come out, but the connection was spotty, the Orlando Sentinel reported. When an officer came to give Lindsey another phone, he spotted the lifeless body of one of the children, so officers decided to raid the house.
After getting inside, cops “found that all four children have been killed by the suspect by apparent gunshot wounds,” Orlando Police Chief John Mina said.
The children were ages 1, 6, 10 and 11. “We have no idea when those children lost their lives,” Mina said.
Lindsey was found dead of a gunshot wound in a closet.
Records show Lindsey was on probation for a 2008 arrest in Volusia County, in which he was accused of trying to burn down a house in Orange City during an domestic argument.
He was also accused of threatening a woman with a knife as she held her 7-month-old son in Orange County in 2012, but prosecutors opted not to file charges in that case.
