EUGENE, Oregon — What began as a brazen car theft, turned into a wild car chase, demolition derby and gun battle before the suspect was finally caught because he wasn’t wearing a mask.
Oregon police say Trevor James Hudson, 32, triggered off the out-of-control escapade when he snatched a Nissan X-terra from in front of a business in Eugene.
The car’s owner then gave chase in another car, eventually cornering Hudson on a dead-end street. That led the victim to slam his car into the one Hudson was driving in order to pin him in and prevent him from leaving, cops said.
The stolen car’s owner then hopped out and tried to confront Hudson, who pulled a gun. The victim then pulled out a gun of his own and fired at Hudson, who then sped off, cops said.
Hudson eventually abandoned the vehicle by a Hampton Inn and ran inside. But since he was not wearing a mask, hotel employees demanded he leave. When they realized he was acting suspiciously, they called the police.
Officers with the Eugene Police Department and the Oregon State Police eventually caught up with Hudson near an Umpqua Bank and arrested him for robbery and unlawful use of a weapon.
