Body of 5th teenager found in LI Town Plagued by Latin Gang Violence

BRENTWOOD, New York — For the fifth time since September, police have discovered the grisly remains of a teenager in a Long Island town that has been plagued by gang violence.

Suffolk County homicide detectives said the badly decomposed body of 18-year-old Jose Pena-Hernandez was found near the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center in Brentwood. He was a known member of the gang MS-13 and had been missing since June.

Police are treating the case as a homicide. Although the cause of death has yet to be determined, cops believe Pena-Hernandez was beaten to death.

Four Brentwood High School teens have been found dead within the past six weeks, all of whom police believe were the victims of gang violence.

On Sept. 13, the badly beaten body of Nisa Mickens was found a day before her 16th birthday. A day later, the beaten body of her friend, 16-year-old Kayla Cuevas, was discovered nearby.

Days later, police discovered the skeletal remains of Oscar Acosta, 19, and Miguel Garcia-Moran, 15, in a remote industrial area of the town.

Police have been cracking down on local gang members in the area and have made 35 arrests since mid-September, although no one has yet been charged in any of the killings.

Teacher Convicted of Raping Student Slashes Throat in Courtroom

SANTA ANA, California — An ex-school teacher convicted of raping a 13-year-old student slashed his throat with a razor in front of a horrified California courtroom after hearing the verdict.

Jeffrey Scott Jones, 56, had just been convicted of two felony counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and one felony count of continuous sexual abuse, when he pulled out a razor blade and cut his own throat.

“Right after the judge asked if we wanted jurors polled, both attorneys said no, and then he took a razor out of his left pocket and slashed his throat,” Senior Deputy District Attorney Heather Brown told CBS Los Angeles. “His head hit the table and I thought he fainted, but then I saw the blood and the razor on the table.”

Officers tried to restrain the heavily-bleeding Jones and quickly rushed him and the jury out of the room in Orange County Superior Court. Court officials said he was likely to survive. No one else was hurt.

It was not clear how Jones, who had been free on bail, managed to smuggle the blade into the courthouse, but officials said they were reviewing security protocols.

Jones had been working as an advanced placement English teacher at the Libra Academy in Huntington Park at the time of the crime. Previously, he worked for 27 years at Bell High School in the City of Bell.

The victim, who is now 17, was not one of Jones’ students. Prosecutors say Jones repeatedly raped the girl over a period of eight months starting in late 2012. In May 2013, Jones threatened that he would ruin the girl’s life if she told anyone what had happened. The attacks were reported to police that month and Jones was arrested in June.

He faces a maximum sentence of 68 years to life in state prison when he is sentenced on Nov. 4,

Pipeline Leaking Ammonia Gas kills Nebraska Farmer

A lethal gas leak shut down a highway in rural Nebraska

TEKAMAH, Nebraska — A deadly gas leak from a pipeline carrying anhydrous ammonia killed a motorist and forced authorities to shut down a highway in rural Nebraska.

The leak from the eight-inch pipe, spilled 294,000 gallons of the substance which created a deadly cloud of gas that proved fatal to a 59-year-old farmer as he drove through it late Monday night.

He was identified as Phillip Hennig, who lived about a quarter mile away in Tekamah, according to the Omaha World-Record.

Authorities shut down a stretch of highway running near the faulty pipe for at least 24 hours. About 40 residents living in the vicinity were evacuated.

The gas, which is used as a farm fertilizer, can cause difficulty breathing and can be fatal in high doses.

The cause of the leak was not clear. The pipeline, which is owned by the Oklahoma-based Magellan Midstream Partners LP is 1,100 miles long and runs from Texas to Minnesota.

“We express our deepest sympathies over the tragic death of the local resident last night,” said Mike Mears, Magellan’s chief executive officer.

Man in Wheelchair Commits Suicide by Pipe Bomb in Oakland Clinic

A disturbed man in a wheelchair used a pipe bomb to commit suicide in an Oakland clinic

OAKLAND — A wheelchair-bound man blew himself up with a pipe bomb in a California health clinic in what police say was an act of suicide.

The unidentified man entered the lobby of the San Antonio Neighborhood Health Center in Oakland and waited for everyone to leave before detonating the explosive around 6:30 p.m.

“The investigation reveals this is an isolated incident where an individual took his own life,” the Oakland police department said in a statement.

No one else was hurt.

The man had been a patient at the clinic, but it was not clear why he was there at the time, which was about an hour after closing, the East Bay Times reported. The paper said the man told a security guard to leave shortly before detonating the bomb.

Ohio Father Sentenced to Death in Fatal Beating of Daughter

CINCINNATI — An Ohio father convicted of killing starving and fatally beating his 2-year-old daughter, was sentenced to death.

Glen Bates’ daughter, Glenara, weighed just 13 pounds when she died in 2015. She was pronounced dead after her mother took her to a hospital where doctors found belt and bite marks as well as bruises all over her body.

Prosecutors said she also was missing teeth, had broken ribs and suffered head trauma and other injuries. Authorities said the little girl had suffered the head injuries when Bates swung her body into a door frame, “like a baseball bat,” the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

“This man is a murderer who needs to pay for what he did to this innocent baby,” Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said in a statement. “My heart breaks for this little girl. She died in one of the most horrific ways imaginable.”

A jury convicted the 34-year-old Bates in September of aggravated murder and recommended he be sentenced to death. While his lawyers argued for a life sentence but the judge followed the jury’s recommendation.

The little girl’s mother, Andrea Bradley, 30, has pleaded not guilty in the case but also faces a possible death sentence. Her lawyers have argued that her IQ is below the legal limit to be put to death and have asked the judge to have doctors check her mental competency.

Bradley’s six children are in the custody of relatives or family services.

STORRS, Connecticut — A 19-year-old student at the University of Connecticut was killed in a freak accident over the weekend in which she was run over by a fire department SUV pulling out of its station.

Connecticut State Police say Jaffny Pally had been seated with her back against the fire department vehicle bay door around 1 a.m. Sunday when a call came in and the SUV pulled out quickly.

When the door lifted, Pally fell backwards and the vehicle, a Chevy Tahoe, rolled over her. It was not clear why she was sitting against the door.

Pally, who hailed from nearby West Hartford, was planning to study nursing, her family told the Hartford Courant.

“Every student is precious to us, and this is a heartbreaking and tragic loss. Our deepest sympathies go out to her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. We know that words cannot begin to express their grief,” UConn President Susan Herbst said in a statement.

The driver of the department vehicle was placed on administrative lead while state police continue their investigation.

TRENTON, New Jersey — Prosecutors say 36-year-old Charles Diggs, of Roselle, N.J. had 325,000 files depicting child pornography including 14,000 videos showing the rape of very young children.

“Diggs allegedly had the most child pornography ever found in a state investigation – more than four times the prior record,” said Attorney General Christopher Porrino. “It’s heartbreaking to think of the many thousands of children who were raped and robbed of their innocence to create the images and videos he allegedly possessed.”

Authorities became aware of Diggs after getting a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about a Twitter account that was allegedly uploading child pornography onto the web. An investigation led police to Diggs who was arrested Sept. 3.

A search of his computers revealed the scope of his sickening collection.

A grand jury indicted Diggs on Friday on charges of with second-degree distribution of child pornography and third-degree possession of more than 100 files of child pornography. Diggs faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Man Tweaking on LSD Rescues Dog From Fire in His Mind

HALFMOON, New York — He was a hero in his own mind.

Michael Orchard of Halfmoon, N.Y., was high on LSD and cough syrup when he slammed his car through the fence of his neighbor’s house, broke their sliding door and took their dog, police said.

Orchard believed the dog needed to be saved from a fire – but in fact it was all in his imagination.

“He believed that the residence was on fire and he was rescuing the dog,” said Trooper Mark Cepiel, of the New York State Police told WNYT-TV.

The large white dog was unharmed and later returned to its owners, according to the Albany Times Union.

Orchard, 43, was arrested for second degree burglary and third degree criminal mischief, police said. He was arraigned in Halfmoon Court and remanded to Saratoga County Jail after failing to post bail.

WILSALL, Montana — If you come across a place called the Crazy Mountains, maybe it’s best to stay away.

Montana police discovered the body of an elk hunter who had gone missing within the Crazy Mountains in central Montana just a mile from where he had last been seen about a week earlier.

Officials say 60-year-old Mark Rollins of Decorah, Iowa appeared to have fallen off a cliff to his death.

The Park County Sheriff’s office said Rollins had last been seen by a group of hunters on Sept. 20. But when they returned a week later and found his truck still parked where he left it, they grew concerned and called police.

When investigators contacted Rollins’ wife she said he had contacted police in Iowa after her husband had been late in returning home.

Rollins, who owned a restaurant in his hometown called Ede’s & the Angry Pickle, was described as an experienced backcountry hunter. According to the group of hunters who had spotted him, was well equipped and prepared for an extended stay. He was in good health, so authorities believe the fall that resulted in his death was an accident
