LANTANA, Florida — In a scene straight out of a horror movie, a deranged man jumped out of the bushes with a chainsaw and attacked a woman out for a morning walk, leaving her seriously injured, police said.
The terrifying episode unfolded outside a Super 8 Motel in Lantana, Florida just after 7 a.m. Tuesday, when cops say 20-year-old Juan Carlos Cabrera Jr. knocked the 60-year-old woman to the ground and began slashing at her with a chainsaw.
“I’m going to end this woman’s life,” Lantana Police Chief Sean Scheller later quoted Cabrera telling investigators what was going through his mind when he saw the victim.
Investigators said there appeared to be no connection between Cabrera and the woman.
“It’s a random act,” Scheller said, according to the Palm Beach Post. “To be targeted like that is a disgrace.”
Cabrera had been staying at the Super 8 and the victim told cops she thought he was a landscaper because he was holding a chainsaw.
The woman was saved after several motorists hopped out of their cars to help her, police said. She suffered slash wounds to her chest and hands but is expected to survive.
Cops caught up to Cabrera nearby and arrested him without incident. Scheller said it was not immediately clear if he was under the influence of drugs or suffered from mental illness.
Cabrera had two recent arrests for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. A 2015 arrest report listed his occupation as “ground man” for a landscaping company.
