AMSTERDAM — Cell phone theft is usually a dime a dozen event, but Anthony van der Meer has turned it into a real whodunit.
The Dutch student filmmaker found inspiration when his cell phone was recently stolen which left him wondering where such ubiquitously stolen pieces of technology end up.
So he bought a new phone and installed an anti-theft app called Cerberus which would allow him to track where the device would go. Then he left it out to be stolen.
It took four days, but finally someone takes off with his phone. Over the next two weeks, van der Meer secretly follows the thief around Amsterdam and beyond with the stolen phone, documenting his every move.
The result is a short-form documentary called, ”Find my Phone.”
For just over 20 minutes, it provides an engrossing look at the private life of a thief who doesn’t know he is being spied on, but also reveals the equally disturbing reality of how easily we can all be watched.
