GAINESVILLE, Florida — Here’s one way to land your butt in jail.
A Florida city staff assistant has been charged with running up nearly $92,000 in credit card purchases on the city dime, including $8,500 on a Brazilian butt lift, officials say.
Natwaina Clark, 33, began working for the city of Gainesville in August 2015 as an assistant to the parks and cultural affairs manager, police said. During that time, she was entrusted to use city credit cards to make purchases for the departments.
But police say that within a few months of being hired, Clark began running up personal charges on the card. By the time she was arrested in March 2017, she had run up $91,598 in personal expenses and the city departments had overrun their budgets, police said.
She was charged with fraud and has seen been released on bond.
A subsequent review of city accounts released this week, revealed that Clark had spent $8,500 of city money to get butt lift surgery, $2,400 to pay her cable and internet bills, $1,000 at CVS, $739 on food and $600 on a big screen TV.
She also moved $41,000 into her PayPal account to use as spending cash on top of her $33,500 annual salary, the Gainesville Sun reported.
Clark explained her lavish spending to co-workers by claiming to have a boyfriend who liked to spend money on her. In one instance, Clark sent herself a bouquet of flowers, using the company card, that she claimed was from her boyfriend.
Most shockingly, the report also discovered that Clark had been previously arrested in similar circumstances in Orlando. There, she was charged with illegally selling employee information to a third party while working in the human resources department of Hughes Supply, a plumbing wholesaler.
Clark pleaded no contest in that case and was sentenced to probation.
