JACKSONVILLE, Florida — This guard dog was a little too good at his job.
A Florida man told police in Jacksonville that his dog, Diesel, accidentally shot his girlfriend in the leg while she was sleeping when the pooch jumped up on the nightstand.
Brian Murphy, 25, said the dog woke him up around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday to be let outside. He took him out and when they came back inside, Diesel darted into the darkened bedroom first and the man says he then saw a flash of light and heard a loud bang, according to WJAX-TV, which cited a police report.
He says he believes the dog jumped up on the nightstand where his handgun was lying, setting it off.
His 25-year-old girlfriend woke up and discovered she was bleeding from her leg. She was taken to a local hospital but the gunshot wound was not considered life threatening, police said.
She told police she doesn’t know what happened.
Neighbors said they considered Murphy’s tale dubious and police said they were continuing to investigate.
