JACKSONVILLE, Florida– This guy’s got a drinking problem.
An 18-year-old Florida man has been charged with killing his grandmother after she took his beer and hid it while he was in the shower.
Police say Dylan Broughman allegedly began tearing up his family’s home on the morning of Oct. 10 when he couldn’t find his beer, punching holes in the wall and screaming “It’s all your fault, everything is your fault!” at his 69-year-old grandmother, Joyce Courson.
He then turned his rage on her, knocking her to the ground and punching and kicking her repeatedly on the head, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
Roommate Dillon Ross heard the argument, but told the Florida Times-Union that Broughman sometimes argued with his grandmother in the morning, so he didn’t immediately think anything of it.
“She took the beer and he just flipped out and I guess she wouldn’t tell him where she put it, so he started punching holes in the wall, then destroying the house pretty much and then blaming her,” Ross said.
“I didn’t think anything of it until I heard this ridiculous crash. That’s when it was like this turned into something crazy. After the crash, I heard the grandmother screaming for help.”
When Ross ran to see what was happening, he found Courson bleeding on the ground and Broughman had fled from the house. Police caught up with him a few blocks away, and he was initially charged with aggravated battery.
But when Courson died from her injuries a week later, the charges were eventually upgraded on Nov. 3 to murder. He is being held without bail.
His mother, Tracey Lynn Broughman, said she was devastated.
“I am sick for the loss of my mother. I am sick for the loss of my son. I don’t feel he deserves to go to prison. I don’t feel in my heart that he meant to do this to the severity that he did,” she said.
