RIVERSIDE, California — Police have arrested a heartless mom who appears to have abandoned her 2-year-old daughter at a California supermarket.
The woman, identified by Riverside police as 31-year-old Chiengkham Vilaysane, walked into a Food-4-Less market in Riverside Sunday afternoon with her daughter in tow,.
At one point, the toddler wandered off and Vilaysane never went looking for her and continued shopping. When another shopper brought the girl back to the mother, the woman said: “Oh, just leave her,” according to police.
Vilaysane then abandoned the child after paying for her groceries.
“It appears the toddler was intentionally left in the store by the mother,” the Riverside police said in a statement. “The small child was able to identify the woman as her “mommy” when she was shown a photo from the surveillance footage.”
On Tuesday, police were led to Vilaysane after viewers who had seen her and recognized her from surveillance images shown on the news called detectives.
Investigators says Vilaysane has had a history of drug and alcohol arrests and that she has a history of mental illness and is estranged from her family.
The daughter is currently in the custody of child protective services. Vilaysane faces possible charges of child endangerment and abandonment.
