CAPE CORAL, Florida — A sicko sex offender being arrested for the second time for attempting to lure a young boy for sex, tried to avoid another stint behind bars by stabbing himself with a wooden sailfish statue.
Cops in Florida say Paul Morgan Newport, 50, was one of 18 men snatched up last week in a sting of men who were trawling social media to solicit underage victims for sex.
The Lee County Sheriff’s office says Newport solicited an undercover agent posing as a 14-year-old boy on the hookup app Grindr and agree to meet for oral sex, WFTX-TV reported.
After detectives met him at the agreed rendezvous spot instead and Newport was taken into custody, he managed to bolt into a bedroom where he grabbed the wooden fish statue that sat on the nightstand and used it to slash his neck.
Officers used a Taser to subdue him and rushed him to a hospital where he was treated for his injuries.
In 2016, Newport was nabbed in a similar sting and has been a registered sex offender ever since.
