WOODRUFF, South Carolina — Police uncovered a stone cold serial killer after arresting a man for the kidnapping a woman and chaining her up for months, when he chillingly confessed to killing seven people, including the woman’s boyfriend.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff says Todd Kohlhepp admitted being behind the unsolved slaying of four men at a South Carolina motorcycle shop in 2003.
Kohlhepp also led investigators to the unmarked graves of two other people on the 100-acre property he owns where cops discovered Kala Brown chained in a shipping container since she and her boyfriend, Charles Carver, disappeared in August.
A body discovered on the rural property on Friday by cadaver dogs has been identified as Carver. Brown told police that Kohlhepp had shot and killed Carver in front of her following their kidnapping.
Sheriff Chuck Wright said investigators believe it is possible that other bodies may be found on the property, which Kohlhepp bought two years ago and had spent tens of thousands of dollars to erect a chain link fence around.
The 45-year-old Kohlhepp has so far been charged with kidnapping and four counts of murder although police say more charges are expected.
Kohlhepp is a registered sex offender, stemming from the brutal kidnapping and rape of a 14-year-old neighbor in Arizona when he was a teenager. In that case, Kohlhepp forced the girl at knifepoint into his house were he tied her up and raped her. After the attack, Kohlhepp said he would kill her 6-year-old and 3-year-old siblings that she was babysitting if she called the police.
Court documents from the case quoted Kohlhepp’s father saying the only emotion his son was capable of was anger.
Brown and Carver’s disappearance in late August sent a chill through the community and perplexed investigators. Local news reports said Brown had recently started to work for Kohlhepp, who is a real estate broker, cleaning houses he was looking to rent.
Wright said investigators were drawn to Kohlhepp’s property by the last known cell phone signals from the missing couple.
