CLEVELAND — A panty-sniffing, ex-Notre Dame College student was sentenced to 10 days in jail for stealing over 650 pairs of women’s underwear from his classmates.
David Zinram, 22, had been a promising student photographer at the school and prosecutors say some of his victims were female athletes he had photographed.
Zinram was arrested last March after a wave of panty thefts had left the college perplexed, with more than a dozen students filing complaints that their underwear and bras had been taken from laundry rooms, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.
Police were about to install undercover cameras in the school’s laundry rooms, when a student caught Zinram in the act.
A search of his room revealed 656 pieces of women’s underwear stashed inside the ceiling tiles, police have said.
A search of Zinram’s computer showed he had researched how to break into cars and houses, and had looked at pornography that depicted rape and a video called “Panty Sniffer Gets Caught.”
Zinram had initially been charged with burglary but reached a deal with prosecutors to plead guilty to receiving stolen property and misdemeanor theft.
Judge Steven Gall, however, viewed the deal dimly and said Zinram should have faced more time behind bars.
“I have grave concerns about your behavior, what I’m going to characterize as deviant behavior,” Gall said.
Zinram’s parents have said their son, who has since left the school, is deeply embarrassed and remorseful for his actions. They said his behavior had been exacerbated by a reaction to using the drug Adderall to control his attention deficit disorder.
“I know that what I did was wrong, and I feel for the victims,” Zinram said. “Adderall is not an excuse for the situation, but it’s a little bit of an explanation that was a bigger story and I just hope that you can understand that.”
