DALLAS — A U.S. Army vet has been arrested following a bizarre incident in which he riddled an idling Uber cab with bullets after spotting the driver posing for a photo with a passenger’s gun and mistaking it for a robbery, cops said.
John Beaty, 33, is accused of pumping 10 to 15 shots through the passenger side door and window, striking driver, Al Aloosi, several times in the chest, the Dallas Police said. He is expected to live. Aloosi’s passenger was not hurt..
The terrifying episode unfolded when Aloosi, 24, stopped to pick up a passenger and noticed he was carrying a small case and asked what it was, the Dallas Morning News reported. When told it contained a handgun, Aloosi asked if he could see the weapon and take a photo with it.
The passenger agreed, releasing the magazine before handing to Aloosi, cops said. It was when Aloosi held the weapon against the right side of his own face, that Beaty allegedly fired multiple shots into the car.
Cops say Beaty is an Army vet who may be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, and believe that when he saw the gun, he thought someone was in danger, prompting him to open fire.
When cops arrived at the scene, they say they found Beaty kneeling over Aloosi and applying pressure to his wounds.
Aloosi then told officers that the “guy with the beard shot me.”
Beaty was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
