BAYTOWN, Texas — She’s the kind of girl you don’t bring home to mother.
A Texas teen has been charged with fatally shooting her boyfriend on New Year’s Eve after stealing his guns and then demanding cash for their return, prosecutors said.
The Harris County Sheriff’s office says Yvonne Raquel Ramirez, 19, had recently met Joshua McKinney, an aspiring Marine, and started dating him while concocting a plot to steal his gun collection.
After making off with the guns, police say Ramirez arranged to meet McKinney early on New Year’s Eve to give them back in exchange for $2,000. But the encounter turned to chaos when McKinney placed her in a chokehold and put a gun to her head, a witness told cops, KTRK-TV reported.
As the witness ran to call 911, gunshots were fired and McKinney lay dead on the street. Ramirez was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, cops said.
Ramirez told authorities that the two of them were getting high when McKinney accused her of stealing his guns. She said it wasn’t true but that when he turned violent, she took a gun that he had tucked in his back and shot him.
But investigators found text messages on her phone in which she described stealing his McKinney’s weapons. She was charged with first degree murder.
The Houston Chronicle reported that detectives were looking for other they believe might have been involved.
