JENKINS, Kentucky — A wannabe weatherman was busted for setting forest fires and filming them in order to attract attention to his amateur weather reports on Facebook.
Johnny Mullins, 21, had posted a number of selfie videos in front of fires or segment she called “Weather Outlook,” Jenkins Police Chief James Stephens told The Associated Press.
He posted his last video on Nov. 6, warning viewers in eastern Kentucky to be “extremely careful if you are out there. The clip drew 2,900 viewers.
Stephens says Mullins admitted starting the fires because “he enjoyed the attention he got from the Facebook stuff.”
“It’s really too bad because he’s not a bad kid — just misguided,” Stephens said. “He just didn’t realize how much danger he was putting other people in.”
The fires came amid a spate of dangerous wildfire throughout the region.
Mullins has been charged with second degree arson for a blaze in Letcher County that cops say burned out of control.
