South African authorities have launched a probe after a woman who had been declared dead by paramedics was discovered to be alive inside a morgue refrigerator.
Officials say the woman had been involved in a motor vehicle accident that killed two people. She was taken to the Carletonville morgue after being declared dead by paramedics.
As the crew from Distress Alert ambulance service was filling out forms, one of them went into the fridge to check on something and got the shock of his life.
“When he pulled out the woman’s body‚ he saw that she was breathing,” a morgue official told The Times of South Africa.
The woman, who was not identified, was rushed to a local hospital near Johannesburg.
An investigation into the incident is being carried out
Ambulance service officials insist they are not to blame about the latest familiar.
“This did not happen because our paramedics are not properly trained. There is no proof of any negligence by our crew‚” he said.
