YORK HAVEN, Pennsylvania — Nothing comes between this woman and her beer.
A suspected drunk driver slammed on the gas and sent her station wagon flying off a Pennsylvania pier into the Susquehanna River in a bid to get away from cops, and then sat back and sipped a beer as her car floated away.
Police first encountered the woman when they spotted her blowing through a stop sign and kept going.
“She failed to yield (to police) and we believe the driver was attempting to elude the officer,” Northeastern Police Chief Bryan Rizzo told the York Daily Record. “We called it off when we were heading into Newberry Township.”
That’s when she was spotted by Newberry Township Police who found her parked at a boat launch in town. When officers tried to hem her vehicle in and talk to her, she gunned it and drove straight into the river, police said.
The acceleration launched her Subaru Outback about 20 feet from the shore where she sat comfortably behind the wheel amid waist-high water and ignored cops.
“She stayed in the car and continued to drink her beer,” Newberry Township Police Sgt. Keith Farren said.
Eventually, firefighters aboard a boat pulled her from the vehicle and took her to a local hospital.
